The EDGE of AFRICA Academy
This year, we hosted three very special volunteers (that's not saying that all of our volunteers are not special) however Annie, Ben and Paul visited us from the UK and have subsequently made a very valuable link for us with one of their local schools. The school is renovating and has kindly donated an endless list of resources to our Academy.
The Academy will:
- aim to assist with after school classes, giving attention to various children who are willing but don't necessarily have the means to excel in their learning.
- give children the opportunity to take part in extra-curricular activities that they would not get the chance to take part such as singing, dancing, music, acting etc
- give children a safe and inspiring environment to spend their time in and the freedom to excel
You may ask us why we aren't fundraising to buy or make the equipment here. Our calculations tell us that it will cost us almost 3 times the amount to buy the quality and quantity of equipment that they have donated for us and on top of the cost of the building we would need, this would not be affordable.
So...what do we need your assistance with?
1) We need to raise R 40 000 for the storage and shipping of the goods.
2) We need to raise around R 150 000 for a building (we are still waiting for various local stakeholders to come back to us with costs, funding and options so watch this space)
3) Spreading the word for qualified and enthusiastic volunteers to assist us with the ongoing running of the academy.
