Be part of our biggest project yet...the EDGE Academy (25 weeks ago)

START FROM THE BEGINNING PLEASE....

What is volunteering?

Volunteering is the practice of people working on behalf of others or a particular cause without payment for their time and services. Volunteering is generally considered an altruistic activity, intended to promote good or improve human quality of life, but people also volunteer for their own skill development, to meet others, to make contacts for possible employment, to have fun, and a variety of other reasons that could be considered self-serving. For more details read Volunteering 101

What does ethical volunteering mean?

In essence when we say we are ethical, we mean that we are working on projects without imposing or negatively impacting Africa. Short and long term goals have to be in place in order to benefit the project undertaking.
For more details on this read Volunteering 101

What does sustainable volunteering mean?

This basically means that EDGE of AFRICA is committed to a continuous contribution, be it in the form of manpower, support, advice, even when volunteers are not presence on a particular project. The project needs to survive through ongoing methods and volunteer contribution simply amplifies this.
For more details on this read Volunteering 101

Is EDGE of AFRICA an agent?

No, the projects we run are our own. We investigate the needs in our area and then either work in conjunction with organisations and the community or establish the projects ourselves, in order to help relieve those needs. For example, there is a need for locals to learn English. We have thus established the Funda English project. We reach pre, junior and high schools, and groups of adults with our English lessons, solely coordinated by the EDGE of AFRICA team and volunteers.

Where does EDGE of AFRICA get its funding from?

Because we are not a government organisation, we do not get any funds from the government. And because we are not an agent, we also do not get any commission for volunteer placements. And because our business is all about volunteering, we also do not get paid by the organisations involved in the projects we are dealing with (like the schools or clinics we are supporting).
We rely completely on the contributions of volunteers. Our projects are ongoing, meaning that even without the presence of volunteers, we aim to continue supporting the projects we are involved with. And that is why volunteers pay to join us.

How do I know I am contributing to a good cause?

No matter what we tell you on our website, you will not know for sure. But you can read some blogs, visit our Facebook pages and question past volunteers. Our aims are clear and our ethos is sound and ethical.
EDGE of AFRICA establishes projects that will benefit the local community and / or environment (nature / wildlife) directly. Our projects are aimed at sustainability. We will not place volunteers in positions which just offer them an exciting experience and some nice pictures to take home. Instead, we ensure our volunteers being part of revolutionary projects which will make a real difference, in the lives of South Africans, as well as of the volunteers. Just come see for yourself!

WHERE??

Is Africa a country?

Surprisingly, we get asked this question a lot! Africa is huge! It will take you approximately six weeks to drive from one end of Africa to the other and you will cross all the zones of latitude.
Africa is a continent, made up of 54 countries. (Like Europe being a continent made up of different countries.) For example, Egypt is a country within Africa, which is a completely different place to South Africa, and so are Kenya and the Congo. Each country has its own government, currency, race, culture, etc. South Africa is the southern most country in Africa and the most advanced on the continent.

Is South Africa a province of Africa?

Well, The Republic of South Africa is a country located at the southern tip of Africa, with a 2,798 kilometres (1,739 mi) coastline on the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. To the north lie Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe; to the east are Mozambique and Swaziland; while Lesotho is an independent country wholly surrounded by South African territory.
For more details on the history, background, statistics and demographics of the country see Republic of South Africa

What should I expect from South Africa as a country?

When you first arrive in South Africa, you will probably be pleasantly surprised by how developed the country seems. Everything is available and all amenities are accessible.

Although you will see alot of development, rich areas with mansions and new shopping malls, you will also see poverty, homelessness and lack of infrastructure in many areas.

Does EDGE of AFRICA have projects in Cape Town?

We are in the process of setting up projects in Cape Town, however one of the reasons we are working in the area we do is that rather than spend all you time in the traffic of busier bigger cities you can maximise your time on the projects. How is Knysna pronounced?

Nize-Na! (Just because it is so nice)

Will I see lions in Knysna?

Well maybe on the wildlife resort pamphlets in our tourism office. Luckily for you, lions do not roam the streets of Knysna - neither do any other dangerous animals. (Maybe just a stray dog or two.) You may be lucky enough to see baboons, vervet monkeys, bush buck and many birds. You will have an opportunity to see lions on some of the excursions we run over weekends, though.

WILL I BE SAFE?

I have heard stories about South Africa being dangerous, will I be safe?

The larger cities in South Africa have a high crime rate - the Garden Route area on the other hand does not. However, this is a third world country, and a high percentage of the citizens are unemployed and under-privileged. Take care of your belongings at all time. We can look after any valuables you have during your stay such as passports, travel documents etc. Carry limited amounts of cash around with you at any time. Edge of Africa takes no responsibility for the loss of personal items or money during any point of your stay.

Project Safety
Every precaution has been taken to assure you during your stay. However sometimes due to the remote locality of some of the projects, emergency facilities may only available through medical air rescue service. South Africa fortunately has a high medical service standard.

It is imperative that you have comprehensive travel insurance that includes hospital visits, transport to hospital and repatriation to your home country in case of emergency.

FREE TIME FUN?

What can I do on the weekends?

Weekend time is set aside to hunt for food and collect rainwater for the following week. Not quite (but it would have been exciting!). EDGE of AFRICA arranges a number of trips in the Garden Route area on Saturdays. These include day trips to Oudtshoorns famous Cango Caves and Ostrich farms, wildlife sanctuaries, craft markets, Mossel Bay, Game Reserves. Other options include shark cage diving, the highest bridge bungee jump in the world and whale, dolphin and seal safaris.
The Garden Route really has it all and there are more fun and adventure activities to choose from than you will be able to fit in. There is, of course, the option to just chill on one of our beaches, relax at the volunteer house or go for a bike ride around town

HOW DO I TRAVEL FROM A to B?

Do I need an international drivers license for South Africa?

Your airport pick-ups, transfers and project transport will be included as per arrangement, so you will not necessarily need your own transport during your project. Foreign driving licenses are valid in South Africa for up to 6 months, but must be printed in English. However if you do not have such a license, you will need to get an International Driving Permit.

Can you book a rental car in South Africa or should you arrange car hire in your own country before departure?
Your airport pick ups, transfers and project transport will be included as per arrangement, so you will not necessarily need your own transport during your project. However if you would like to hire a car for before or after your project you can book car rental prior to coming to South Africa, as car rental companies might be fully booked when you get here. However, there are a number of well-known car rental companies to choose from at international airports and in locations across the country, so on the spot bookings should generally not be a problem.

Who will pick me up at the airport?

Because you are in Africa, we kind of expect you to hitch a ride on an elephant truck or hike along the wilderness to our cave in Knysna. Just kidding! An EDGE of AFRICA representative will collect you from George Airport, or from Island Vibe Backpackers in Knysna if travelling on the Baz Bus from Port Elizabeth or Cape Town.

Can you pick me up from Johannesburg Airport?
