Program Summary
In conjunction with the South Africa National Parks , the largest Rasta community in South Africa has established a nature trail that meanders along the Kayalethu River basin (adjacent to the community). Previously this was a piece of land covered with overgrown alien vegetation and a polluted river. The Rasta's initiated the rehabilitation of this eco-system, turning it into a sustainable community project.
Volunteer on your gap year, career break or make a difference on your holiday and help us with green the underpriviledged areas! Volunteers are creating walkways, information points, removing the alien invasive species and planting indigenous species- attracting back all the indigenous wildlife. This really is a unique and successful project which deserves our support!
Skills Required
No experience is necessary and we accept volunteers from any background. Volunteers with a conservation, sports or community development background may consider joining this program for work related experience.
Volunteers should be physically fit and mentally positive!

Location
The Garden Route is situated on the east coast of South Africa and is true to its name – being world famous for its diversity, beauty and mild climate. Spectacular scenery includes a pristine coastline, huge wetlands, salt marshes, rivers, mountains crowded closely to the shoreline, tall indigenous forests, vividly coloured wild flowers and the unique fynbos flora.
Projects are based in various areas of the Garden Route, including near the popular holiday destinations of Mossel Bay and Knysna. Both have all amenities that you will need and are situated along a picturesque coastline.
The Judah Square Rastafarian Community is the biggest Rastafarian community of its kind in South Africa. It is home to about 35 families which work closely together making the community tight knit and smooth running. It is located in the Kayalethu township of South Africas favorite town, Knysna. The community boasts an upbeat and welcoming vibe, colorful homesteads and their latest project: The Kayalethu River Trail.
Accommodation
You will be based in simple, clean, dorm style accommodation at our cosy volunteers house, located in Knysna, as well as on-site at the various reserves and national parks. Private, twin or family rooms are available on request.
Should you wish to travel outside of the project during your stay, we will happily recommend safe, comfortable accommodation in the Garden Route.
